Does Medicare Cover Physical Therapy? Answers for Volusia County Seniors

Many of our patients at Trident Sports Medicine and Rehab have the same question: “Does Medicare cover physical therapy?” The short answer is often yes — but there are important details to understand.
This article will walk through some common questions we hear from seniors and their families. It is for general education only and is not a guarantee of coverage. Your specific benefits depend on your Medicare plan and any secondary insurance.

Does Medicare Cover Outpatient Physical Therapy?

In many cases, Medicare Part B helps cover medically necessary outpatient physical therapy when it is ordered by a physician or qualified provider. “Medically necessary” generally means therapy is needed to treat or manage a specific condition, injury, or illness, and there is a reasonable expectation of improvement or prevention of decline.
At Trident, we work closely with your referring provider to make sure we have the documentation needed to support your care.

Will I Have a Copay or Coinsurance?

Most patients have some level of out-of-pocket cost, such as a copay or coinsurance amount. This can vary depending on:

  • Whether you have traditional Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Whether you have a supplemental or secondary insurance plan
  • Your deductible and out-of-pocket maximums

Our front office team can help you verify your benefits and estimate your costs before or during your first visit so there are fewer surprises.

Do I Need a Referral or Prescription?

In most cases, Medicare requires a referral or order from a physician or qualified provider for therapy services to be covered. If you are not sure where to start, you can call our office, and we can help you understand what is needed and coordinate with your doctor when appropriate.

How Many Visits Will Medicare Cover?

There is not a simple one-size-fits-all answer. The number of visits is based on your condition, your response to treatment, and Medicare’s guidelines about what is reasonable and medically necessary. Your therapist and referring provider will work together to update your plan of care and communicate with you as you progress.

What Conditions Can Physical Therapy Help With?

Medicare may help cover physical therapy for many common diagnoses, including:

  • Arthritis and joint pain in the knees, hips, hands, shoulders, and spine
  • Balance problems and history of falls
  • Recovery after joint replacement or other orthopedic surgery
  • Back and neck pain, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease
  • Weakness or mobility changes after illness, hospitalization, or injury
