Back & Neck Pain in Older Adults: When to see a Physical Therapist

2–3 minutes

Back and neck pain are some of the most common reasons adults 50+ seek help at Trident Sports Medicine and Rehab. Sometimes the pain starts after a specific injury, but often it comes on slowly from arthritis, posture changes, or years of normal wear and tear.

The good news: in many cases, conservative treatment such as physical therapy can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and keep you more active and independent.

Common Causes of Back and Neck Pain as We Age

As we get older, it is common to see changes in the spine, such as:

  • Arthritis in the joints of the spine
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Muscle weakness or tightness from decreased activity
  • Posture changes, such as more rounding in the upper back

These issues do not always require surgery, but they can cause pain, stiffness, and difficulty standing or walking for long periods.

Signs It May Be Time to See a Physical Therapist

Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice:

  • Back or neck pain that lasts more than a couple of weeks
  •  Pain that keeps returning every few months
  • Stiffness when getting out of bed or up from a chair
  • Pain that worsens with walking, standing, or certain positions
  • Difficulty looking over your shoulder or turning your head while driving

You should always seek immediate medical care if you experience severe pain after trauma, new weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, or other concerning symptoms. When in doubt, contact your physician or seek emergency care.

  • Targeted exercises to strengthen your core, hips, and upper back
  • Posture and body mechanics training for everyday activities
  • Education on pacing, activity modification, and simple home strategies
  •  Home exercises to support your progress between visits
